Hair wax for men: which to choose

Two questions settle it: how much hold you need, and whether the finish should be matte or shiny. Hold is named on the product (Strong, Ultra Strong, Mega Strong); the finish comes from the type — the Aqua waxes are shiny, Matte Paste and Clay are matte.

How much hold

Hold is readable from the name, not the description:

Strong — everyday hold, a more natural finish. The place to start if you have not used wax before.
Ultra Strong — firmer hold, the shape lasts longer.
Mega Strong — the strongest grade, for spikes and sharply defined shapes.

Thicker, heavier hair asks for more hold; on fine hair the strongest grade weighs the style down easily.

Matte or shiny

This decides whether it looks like you put anything in.

Shiny: the Aqua waxes are water-based and give a wet, shiny finish — the classic barbershop look and the wet look.

Water-based or not

Waxes marked Aqua are water-based: they wash out with shampoo and water and leave no greasy film.

That matters more than it sounds for daily use — a wax that resists washing costs you a second shampoo, and your scalp would rather have one.

Size and price

Most of the range comes in 155 ml and 175 ml tubs at around 2,290 Ft; the 120 ml colour waxes and the 20 g powder waxes sit outside that.

With daily use a 175 ml tub lasts months, because a pea-sized amount is enough per application. For trying one out, the smaller size is the smaller risk.

Short hair, longer hair, fine hair

Short, textured: matte paste or clay. You can separate individual pieces and nothing goes stiff.

Slicked back or spiked: a stronger Aqua wax, or gel — the difference is covered in hair wax or hair gel.

Fine hair: texture powder at the roots first, then a little wax through the lengths.

How to apply it

Work on dry or towel-dried hair. Take a small amount, rub it between your palms until it turns clear, and work from the lengths towards the roots.

Several thin layers beat one thick one: you build the shape that way and the hair does not clump. Read the instructions on the product before use.
